RIBA CPD Showcase

Design, construction and technology

The following CPD materials fall within the ‘Design, construction and technology’ RIBA Core Curriculum topic area.
Seminar, by James Mossman Ltd
A guide to brick manufacturing, aesthetics and the design of brickwork. Specify bricks with confidence. This seminar has been exceptionally well received by architects’ practices throughout the UK. It covers the following topics: understanding brickwork aesthetics; choosing the right colour, texture and design detailing when using bricks; how bricks are manufactured, including timescales and materials used; a full review of the technical properties of bricks, and; basic workmanship requirements for producing quality brickwork.

James Mossman specialises in sourcing and supplying bricks for any type of build project. A privately-owned business with a real family atmosphere (and a work ethic based on ‘making things happen’), the Mossman approach to making brick work comes from a detailed knowledge of the suitability and availability of bricks at the best possible prices. The objective is to support architects, contractors and building developers to deliver projects that maximise their full potential.

When it comes to matching a design specification, sourcing product and arranging timely supply, it would be hard to find a more suitable partner than James Mossman.

Approximate duration excluding time for questions/answers: 40 minutes.
Seminar, by Accoya
An informative guide to selecting and specifying acetylated wood, a material that is created by modifying a softwood using a benign process called acetylation to produce a wood that is both durable (i.e. rot resistant) and very stable, to the extent that it outperforms hardwood species.

Accoya is produced by Accsys Technologies, a fast-growing chemical technology group focused on the sustainable transformation of wood through acetylation.

Seminar, by Nicholson STS Ltd
This seminar focusses on the issues surrounding interstitial condensation, typical scenarios and conditions that contribute to its formation and the possible effects it can have on the building structure. It also covers the relevant parts of BS5250 relating to the ventilation of roof structures, demonstrating how proprietary products can help to meet these requirements.

Nicholson is a manufacturer and supplier of functional and innovative roofing systems to the construction and renewable energy industries. Its brands are widely recognised as providing go-to solutions for common roof construction issues. Nicholson’s area of expertise covers roof void ventilation, making structural connections through the waterproofing layer and weathering service penetrations at roof level.
