Fire protection

Fire dampers, fire resistant glass and even fire-rated mailboxes are all covered in this section, which looks at just some of the many measures necessary to protect building occupants from fire. Most seminars are now available online, but this is not always shown so, if a seminar is of interest to you, do click on the link and check.

Fire Safety Considerations When Specifying Insulation for an Inverted Flat Roof
Discusses how fire regulations apply to inverted roofs and how this impacts on the specification of insulation materials. It is a legal requirement for buildings to be designed to prevent the spread of fire from one structure to another. Consideration must be given to this while designing and specifying building materials for use in an inverted flat roof. Understandably, following the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire there has been an even greater focus on fire safety in residential buildings. However, this does not mean that only non-combustible materials can be used safely in an inverted flat roof. This article addresses how Approved Document B applies to inverted flat roofs, the impact of EC Decision 2000/553/EC on testing requirements, and the importance of selecting appropriate insulation material.

Ravago Building Solutions is one of the largest producers of extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation in Europe, following its acquisition in 2018 of seven XPS production plants and technology from DowDuPont Inc. Its market leading thermal insulation boards can be used in a range of roofing and flooring applications.
