Using the concept of ‘surface tension’ as a narrative thread, the CPD examines how surfaces respond to weather, water, movement, fire, wear and time, and how specification decisions affect the performance of the wider building system. It considers material and system performance, technical evidence, fire classification, regulatory responsibilities, detailing, fixing, maintenance and sustainability, supported by architectural case studies demonstrating these principles in practice.
