This CPD explores the specification of natural coir surfacing for playground and recreational applications, providing architects and specifiers with practical guidance on material selection, safety, performance and system design.
The seminar examines the composition and characteristics of coir play surfacing and considers how natural-origin materials can be assessed alongside more conventional playground surfacing options.
It explains critical fall height (CFH), impact attenuation and the relevance of BS EN 1177, including the importance of specifying a complete tested system rather than considering the visible surface layer in isolation.
The CPD also considers system construction, substrates, drainage and water management, installation, maintenance and long-term performance. Comparative test data is used to explore surface temperature and friction characteristics, together with the importance of understanding the conditions under which performance data has been obtained.
Environmental considerations are discussed in the context of material composition, the complete installed system and the need for product-specific evidence when assessing environmental claims.
Practical case studies demonstrate how these considerations can be applied to both refurbishment and new-build playground projects, including projects where landscape and heritage context influence material selection.
By the end of the CPD, delegates should have a better understanding of:
