RIBA CPD Showcase

Waterproofing

As evidenced here, one of the most popular topics among architects searching for CPD materials, and one of the best catered for in terms of variety and depth of expertise. Here are nine – mostly one-hour – seminars.
ICB’s fully-accredited CPD seminar covers: roof build up options and their pros and cons, installation methods, single ply waterproofing, detailing, profile options, roof gardens, solar roofing, and now roof edge protection. The seminar lasts for approximately one hour and, if delivered over the lunchtime period, can include a buffet lunch.

ICB promotes the idea of improving the environment by making good sustainable use of the roof space. This may be through: adding a green roof construction to encourage local biodiversity, help alleviate the urban heat effect, and cut down on energy usage within the building; the installation of roof-mounted solar PV to produce clean renewable energy to help reduce CO2 emissions and reduce the effects that has on climate change; or simply by waterproofing and insulating the roof to a high standard.
This presentation will provide an insight into the successful techniques that are now being used in the waterproofing industry including: an in depth technical introduction to designing a below ground waterproofing system conforming to BS8102:2009; how modern technology has produced new systems of dealing with leaking/damp structures, in both retrofit and new build scenarios; and how ‘Type C’ method of construction, incorporating a drained cavity, helps the specifier to comply with their responsibilities regarding design criteria.

John Newton and Company is the leading independent provider of waterproofing systems in the UK. Its wide variety of structural waterproofing and pumping products enables it to offer complete waterproofing solutions for a wide variety of applications.
Seminar, by Wykamol Group
This CPD seminar covers all the points and design criteria when converting existing basements using the BS8102 code of practice for waterproofing below ground.

Wykamol Group is the UK's leading manufacturer of specialist products for the building and preservation industries, including products for basement waterproofing, damp proofing, timber treatment and structural repair.
Seminar, by IKO UK
Includes a comprehensive overview of traditional flat roof waterproofing methods and associated system components, introduces the latest flat roofing technologies that have been designed to meet the needs of modern construction, features guidance on sustainability, including details on photovoltaic energy roofs and green roof systems, and has additional sections on design, regulations and guarantees.

IKO Plc offer high performance flat roofing systems, providing specifiers, designers and building owners with engineered solutions that meet budgets, exceed expectations and deliver real value. The IKO range of roofing systems is extensive, encompassing bituminous membrane systems, single ply, hot melt, mastic asphalt, cold liquid applied, green roofs and photovoltaic energy roofs. All encompass a full range of system accessories.
Seminar, by Triton Systems
This seminar focuses on the requirements of waterproofing in new build applications. It covers design philosophy, gives guidance in site evaluation, risk assessment, and the types of waterproofing protection available, as per BS8102 2009.

Triton Systems manufactures and supplies products designed for waterproofing in new build and existing structures. The company also manufactures a range of products for the remedial industry. These include timber and masonry treatments, for dry rot and other timber infestations, and dpc materials.
Covers waterproofing to the Code of Practice BS 8102:2009,and achieving environmental grades with cavity drainage membranes, including case studies of typical problems and how they can be solved. Also includes the use of ‘Cavity Drain’ and ‘Air Gap’ membranes in different situations from domestic basements to London Underground stations.

Delta offers a range of approved waterproof membrane systems, and ancillary products, including sump/pump drainage kits, and channel systems. Delta also provides full technical support. It has a network of registered installers, and can be consulted through all stages of any project. Delta should be contacted early in the design process.
