Whitepaper: Permeable Pavement and Tree Health

Urban trees are vital infrastructure for sustainable, resilient, and liveable cities. However, the dominance of impervious pavements in urban environments severely constrains tree health, survival, and ecosystem service delivery. This white paper synthesises global research, focusing on the effects of permeable pavements on tree growth, root systems, soil health, and stormwater management. Findings demonstrate that permeable pavements when properly designed and maintained, enhance tree health, reduce root-related infrastructure damage, and improve urban water management, supporting the transition to climate-adapted, green cities.
