Thomas Bell-Wright International Consultants

Thomas Bell-Wright International Consultants is a Dubai-based, multi-accredited and privately held engineering firm providing independent Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC) services primarily for the building construction sector.

Along with a focus on large commercial buildings we provide a range of TIC services for building architectural elements, as well as for fire separation and material safety.

Key Service groups are

FIRE TESTING, INSPECTION AND CERTIFICATION for passive fire protection systems – the materials of the building are critical to building safety. We provide all three with accreditation to an impressive range of UK, India, US, EU, ISO and Marine (IMO) fire test standards. We are by far the largest fire testing laboratory in the MENA region. Resistance to Fire, Reaction to Fire and Propagation of Fire tests. We run several certification & listing programs which can be viewed at www.tbwc...

Building Envelope Fire Safety 02 : Propagation of Fire
This CPD is ideally attended in continuation with part 1; though the same is beneficial as a standalone learning as well.

While mock-up testing for various mechanical & physical properties have been known and used since a very long time; the mock-up fire tests have been under a lot of discussion in the recent years. This CPD focuses on the British test methods for Large scale mock-up tests BS 8414 .The session helps the attendee draw a correlation between small scale reaction to fire material test reports and these large scale tests. When and how large scale tests become critical and how to use them effectively. The session also addresses the very touchy subject of Engineering Judgements and Standards like the BS 9414 which has been published recently.

Building Envelope Fire Safety 01 : Reaction to Fire
Anyone involved in Facade Fire Safety often hears a number of different Fire Test Methods. Using them correctly is critical to designing, implementation and maintenance of the fire safety of the Building Envelopes. While these are often grouped under "reaction to fire testing", the properties of Ignitability, Combustibility, Flame Spread & Smoke Index are often quantified using different test methods.

This CPD aims to explain "reaction to fire" as a basic concept and how to view various materials through the eyes of a bunch of different test methods. The CPD also explains various European and American Test methods used to quantify the same properties and how to use these tests.

This CPD forms the fundamentals for the second part of the series which explains Fire Propagation testing.
By the end of the CPD you should have a greater understanding of:
- Reaction to Fire tests for Façade Fire Safety
- The difference between and relationship between Ignitability, Combustibility, Flame Spread & Smoke Index
- European and American Test methods used for reporting the reaction to fire properties
- How to use and (not use) the test results and reports
