RIBA CPD Showcase

Fire protection

Fire dampers, fire resistant glass and even fire-rated mailboxes are all covered in this section, which looks at just some of the many measures necessary to protect building occupants from fire. Most seminars are now available online, but this is not always shown so, if a seminar is of interest to you, do click on the link and check.
A comprehensive look at fire tested system solutions for metal rainscreen cladding. This presentation takes the specifier through the full fire-rated system lifecycle, from the design stage (learning about automation and its role in the manufacturing process), through system testing, and finally to the delivered product and finishes that may be achieved. It also covers the benefits of using a single supplier for the full façade package, emphasises the importance of external testing, and discusses warranties.

BTS Façades and Fabrications produces high-quality façade and rainscreen products to suit to a broad range of budgets. Its extensive design portfolio, coupled with industry-leading rainscreen and façade systems, enjoys an enviable reputation within the industry. Its in-house design and technical team, and varied materials, finishes and manufacturing options, allows the architect to achieve his or her design vision regardless of project limitations. Based in the UK, all BTS products are produced at its purpose-built facility in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham.

Explores the different fire ratings for glass, the importance of having the correct (approved) components in place for fire-resistant windows, screens and doors, and some of the myths surrounding the perceived qualities of toughened glass (and why they should be laid to rest). Key points are illustrated using a mix of videos and data.

When it comes to protecting lives and property, compromise is not an option and full compliance a must. That’s why Vetrotech is committed to making living places more secure and to delivering comfort and peace of mind to all building users. No-one should have to make a choice between safety and wellbeing.

Vetrotech is a pioneer in passive fire protection and high-security glazed solutions. Every day, it translates the near-infinite potential of glass into high-performing, multifunctional solutions that demand no trade-off between function and aesthetic, and that discreetly blend into the surrounding architecture to protect occupants.

Discusses how fire regulations apply to inverted roofs and how this impacts on the specification of insulation materials. It is a legal requirement for buildings to be designed to prevent the spread of fire from one structure to another. Consideration must be given to this while designing and specifying building materials for use in an inverted flat roof. Understandably, following the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire there has been an even greater focus on fire safety in residential buildings. However, this does not mean that only non-combustible materials can be used safely in an inverted flat roof. This article addresses how Approved Document B applies to inverted flat roofs, the impact of EC Decision 2000/553/EC on testing requirements, and the importance of selecting appropriate insulation material.

Ravago Building Solutions is one of the largest producers of extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation in Europe, following its acquisition in 2018 of seven XPS production plants and technology from DowDuPont Inc. Its market leading thermal insulation boards can be used in a range of roofing and flooring applications.
Seminar, by Lindab Ltd
An overview of fire- and fire-and-smoke dampers and how to specify them correctly. Covers: fire and smoke spread and compartmentation and how to use dampers to control the spread of fire and smoke; CE marking; testing of fire dampers to European standards; the classification of fire resistance performance to European standards; how to correctly set out dampers within walls; the differences between single blade fire dampers, curtain type and opposed blade dampers; and, configurations.

Lindab is an international group with 4,400 employees and a presence in more than 30 countries. It develops, manufactures, markets and distributes products and system solutions in sheet metal and steel for simplified construction and improved indoor climate. Lindab is at the forefront of producing technologically-advanced, innovative and eco-friendly products for the building industry. Individually and collectively, these offer real and sustainable alternatives to less environmentally-friendly products such as plastic – without compromising performance.
