Latest CPD materials

Here are the latest CPD materials to have been assessed and approved by the RIBA. They include both new and recently revised, online and in-person CPD seminars.

Due to the more onerous implementation of Part L 2022, the CPD seeks to highlight the designer's obligations in respect of airtightness and the code of practice for the control of moisture in buildings according to BS5250.
It will give guidance on best practices concerning the tapes, membranes and sealants used to reduce unplanned air loss and the management of moisture migration through the fabric layers.
The CPD is weighted towards structures with framed and sheathed backing walls.

- The proper usage and function of sealing materials used around windows, doors and on facades
- The impact of unplanned air loss on building physics & how to meet SAP/SBEM pledges
- Available materials that meet the requirements of Approved Document B

The changing face of the workforce means that traditional office environments are morphing into more agile spaces. Fixtures and fittings need to be able to flex accordingly. This CPD looks at options for non-adhesive flooring solutions and examines what is available for the commercial workplace, including magnetic flooring systems. Non-adhesive flooring as a system is considered from the perspectives of sustainability, design flexibility and operational impacts.

With large windows and glass doors, there is an increased need to control heat, light, glare and privacy using different solar shading products. When considered by the architects early in the project (RIBA stage 2-3), windows, shaped windows and skylights can be prepared for concealed blinds by specifying the necessary space and prepare with electrical wiring. In this CPD we go through different design options to avoid retrofit solar shading products.

Concrete technology proliferated in post-war Europe as engineers and architects began producing ground-breaking building designs and civil structures with structural concrete. For modern practitioners and those responsible for stewardship of post-war era heritage, maintaining these concrete structures while making them more sustainable can be technically challenging.

It is important to understand the significance and construction of these concrete structures, including material constituents of the concrete, unique characteristics, and extent and causes of deterioration as well as project requirements and goals. Proper repair techniques and conservation treatments are critical to preserving their significance and value. This webinar will discuss the history and development of 20th century concrete technology with case studies that demonstrate a range of repair and conservation approaches.

By the end of the CPD you should have a greater understanding of:
- How to define approaches for the maintenance of heritage concrete, including regular assessment, in order to establish baseline conditions, identify needed repairs, and develop a maintenance program
- How to identify inspection tasks, including monitoring protection systems and review of sealant joints, expansion joints, and protection systems

A coating is a layer of material deposited onto a substrate to enhance the surface properties for corrosion and wear protection. Factors affecting the choice of a coating include service environment, life expectancy, substrate material compatibility, component shape and size, and cost. There is a wide range of coating processes for depositing many different types of material at thicknesses ranging from just a few microns, up to several millimetres. Physical Vapor Deposition or PVD surface treatment technology can be used to achieve high adhesion and hardness and in recent years this technology has been increasingly used for various applications.
