RIBA CPD Showcase

Climate

The following CPD materials fall within the ‘Climate – sustainable architecture’ RIBA Core Curriculum topic area.
In 2010, and again in 2013, Building Regulations Document L was revised to further drive the UK towards energy conservation and reducing CO2 emissions. These revisions have had a profound effect on glass specifications, laying new guidelines on performances. This CPD seminar puts the effect of Document L on glass specification into context, providing detailed information on performance requirements and explaining the new parameters set for glass and glazing specification.

This seminar tackles general building regulation issues surrounding window and door reveals, and includes information on specification solutions, heat loss and weather rating concerns, fire safety considerations, cavity width variations, environmental considerations, and current building regulations.

Dacatie Building Solutions is the original manufacturer and supplier of insulated cavity closers for the UK construction market. As a market leader, the Dacatie brand gives specifiers and building contractors the assurance of essential Building Regulations compliance in the construction of cavity walls in the area of reveals around windows and doors.

Dacatie insulated cavity closers have British Board of Agrément (BBA) Certificates. Dacatie profiles are extruded from reconstituted PVCu and include insulation of EPS, XPS or mineral wool, all of which are CFC-free and zero-rated for Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP). The company is ISO 9001 approved and is committed to the implementation of systems and processes that enhance the environment.

This seminar incorporates information gathered as part of the European Initiative for Galvanizing in Sustainable Construction (to which Galvanizers Association was a major contributor). Many independent experts contributed to the initiative, including Professor Tom Woolley, a well-known advocate of green and natural building. The aims of the initiative were to help architects, specifiers, engineers, developers and their clients consider how to use galvanized steel in the context of sustainable construction. This presentation therefore includes information on: the basics of hot dip galvanizing; the galvanizing process; coating characteristics and performance; sustainable aspects of galvanizing, including its carbon footprint, recycling and durability; the benefits of zinc and steel, and case studies featuring lifecycle analysis.

Galvanizers Association (GA) has provided authoritative information and advice on hot dip galvanizing to users and potential users since it was first established in 1949. Hot dip galvanizing makes a vital contribution to our built environment. GA provides free information and advice on design, specification and performance of hot dip galvanizing.
