This seminar is about the design and specification of precast concrete stairs. It will help you to understand the following topics:

Factory Visit
Factory Tour of Prestressed and Precast Concrete Manufacturing Facility
This tour is tailored for architects, engineers and other construction professionals, to give them an understanding of the difference between prestressed and reinforced precast concrete products. Attendees will see the various production stages, for both prestressed flooring units, hollowcore slabs and beams for beam and block flooring, and reinforced concrete units, stairs and landings.
The tour is scheduled from 11am-2pm and includes lunch. The factory is located at Earls Colne Business Park, 14 miles west of Colchester. There is a maximum of 6 guests per tour and visitors are encouraged to bring their own PPE, boots and hard hat.
The tour comprises presentations and videos and a tour of both the prestressed and precast factories. It will help you to understand the following topics:
- Understand the range of precast concrete products available
- Understand the theory of prestressed concrete and the difference between prestressed and reinforced concrete
- Understand the manufacturing processes for prestressed concrete flooring units and precast reinforced concrete stairs and landings
- Understand sequential product loading

Precast Concrete Flooring
This CPD provides an introduction to precast concrete flooring systems, both hollowcore and beam and block, including typical load span capacities, bearing details and a case study on the accommodation of construction loads. It looks at compliance with the requirements of the Building Regulations, Part A, Part B and Part E are discussed together with an outline of manufacturing processes, transport and installation considerations. It will help you to understand the following topics:
- Understand precast concrete sustainability
- Understand typical load span capabilities of hollowcore and beam and block floors
- Understand how construction loads, back propping of in-situ floors and MEWPs, can be accommodated, looking at a case study
- Understand the different types of hollowcore slabs and beam and block flooring and typical bearing details
- Understand Building Regulations including Part A: robustness and disproportionate collapse provisions, Part B: Fire Safety and Part E: Resistance to the Passage of Sound
- Understand manufacturing processes for prestressed hollowcore and T beams
- Understand installation considerations including some of the health and safety issues associated with the installation of precast flooring such as working with cranes, working at height and overhead obstructions
