Beauty Reversed: The Ugly Truth About Waste
The final CPD in the 'Making it Beautifully' series, part 4 explores the concept of waste as a valuable raw material. Led by esteemed, purpose-driven writer, speaker and champion of a circular approach, Katie Treggiden, the presentation looks at why we need to reframe ‘waste’ as a second life resource, acknowledging the psychological barriers of working and succeeding with waste in the interiors space. With a focus on circular design, we deconstruct the circular economy, delving into what it takes to create beautiful interior products that are built to last, are entirely regenerative and yet highly desirable. Finally, the CPD explores the importance of material literacy, aiming to support designers and specifiers in understanding and critiquing their choice with a renewed appreciation of beauty in mind. By the end of the CPD you should have a greater understanding of:

- How materials become classified as 'waste'
- Why we need to reframe 'waste' as a second life resource
- The growing number of designers & makers using waste as their primary resource
- How to confidently interrogate and critique material choices with a renewed appreciation of beauty in mind

The Beauty of Togetherness
The third CPD in the 'Making it. Beautifully' series, part 3 delves into the role of beauty in the design of elderly care. Aiming for beauty in the built environment has important health and well-being benefits that have perhaps been overlooked in the provision of elderly care. In this CPD we explore the importance of community in carving out a more forward-thinking, inclusive UK ‘care model’ that could, at long last, help revolutionise the design and delivery of products, services and settings that empower our elderly to truly ‘live’ for longer. By the end of the CPD you should have a greater understanding of:
- Understand our aging population’s holistic needs
- Appreciate the benefits of community-led care
- Learn from innovative overseas models
- Cover the specifics of designing for dementia
- Gain confidence in selecting surfaces for care settings, with particular focus on slip resistance, colour and contrast

Beauty in the eye of the specifier
The second CPD in the 'Making it Beautifully' series, part 2 widens the lens on beauty to encompass health and well-being, picking up on the intrinsic link between our physical surroundings and emotional selves. Here we explore how the public health crisis has emphasised the need to enhance beauty in the built environment. Delving into the macro-trends including the well-living movement, we will discuss how engineering material selection can be used to design moments of delight in a building, meeting the needs of communities and human well-being.

The Beauty of Heritage
This CPD looks at the topic of heritage in relation to beauty. Drawing on a decade of architectural debate, we explore the question of beauty and look at the renewed interest in heritage and craft that has emerged, especially since the pandemic thrust us even further into a digital world. With a focus on clay and ceramics, this CPD delves into the background of the Potteries, a site of historical industrial importance and contemporary influence. We look at ceramics and how they can be used to capture the beauty of today for future generations and discover the modern methods conserving craftsmanship and community that represent heritage now.
