Overheating Homes: Rules of Thumb and Challenges for Meeting Planning Requirements
This CPD was created to advise architects and developers of residential buildings of the new challenges imposed by recent updates to overheating and acoustic guidance documents that are now referred to by planning policy. Hilson Moran has carried out research on the issue to address the conflicts and imposed methodologies that are having a significant impact on design and procurement. The CPD includes an introduction to the conflicts, an explanation of the assessment methodologies and guidance, the outcome of our research project and a presentation of rules of thumb and solutions to be considered. It will help you to understand the following topics:
- Understand rules of thumb for overcoming overheating risk in new build residential buildings
- Understand architectural design and specifications that affect and improve thermal comfort
- Understand how to overcome the conflict between different environmental parameters that affect design, such as daylight and external noise relative to mitigating overheating risk
- Understand CIBSE TM 59, Design Methodology for the Assessment of Overheating Risk in Homes, 2017 and ProPG Professional Practice Guidance on Planning and Noise, 2017
- Understand passive design measures for noise mitigation
- Understand the outcome of an overheating research project to visualise free vent areas required for different glazed areas, room types, orientations and aspects
- Understand about the draft document, Acoustics Ventilation and Overheating: Residential Design Guide, issued for consultation in February 2018
